Cross Country Region Success!
The cross country teams went out Wednesday in the 5A South Region Championship meet finishing one spot out of state qualification. For the boys team, Ryan Drew and Christian McDonald, and for the girls Eileen Vedder and Taylor Jones each earned individual spots for the State Cross Country Championship meet. They are schedueld to run at the State meet at Great Meadows in Northern Virginia on Saturday, November 15th. Ryan placed third and was the top finisher from the eastern part of the region. His run was a personal best of 15:48.97. His time ranks him third all time in Kellam cross country history, and is the fastest time ever run by a Knight junior. Congratulations Ryan, Christian, Eileen and Taylor, and good luck at the state meet. Also congratulations to the entire Kellam Cross Country team for an outstanding year.
This past Saturday, Kellam High School hosted the District 2 Chorus Auditions. The auditions started at 7am and ended about 12 hours later. In that time, about 1,800 students from all of Virginia Beach's, Norfolk's, and the Eastern Shore's public and private middle and high schools descended upon our school to audition for a spot in the High School Mixed Chorus, High School Women's Chorus, or the Middle School Festival Chorus.
Our Kellam students were hugely successful in hosting the auditions again this year. Many of our students served as guides, showing schools where to warm-up and audition. Some served as room monitors, who worked with the adult judges to get students in and out of the audition rooms. Some students made sure there were refreshments for students and directors, while others led the school buses to the parking area. Many of the choral directors from throughout the district complimented our students on their professional service and positive attitudes. A BIG kudos to our Kellam students for representing our school so well!
Secondly, I would also like to announce that out of the 1,100 high school students who auditioned, we were able to have 34 of our Kellam Chorus students selected for District Chorus! Out of our 66 students who auditioned that day, we had about 52% selected as District Chorus Delegates! I'm very proud of all who auditioned that day, but if you see the following students, please congratulate them on their selection into the District Chorus Ensemble:
Again, thank you so much for your support of the Fine Arts Department and Kellam Chorus!
The Field Hockey team fought a tough battle yesterday against the Kempsville Chiefs and came out on top winning 3-2 and earning them a birth to the regional tournament for the second year in a row. After a scoreless first half, the Chiefs knocked a goal in, fueling the Knights. Hannah C answered back with a reverse tip up in the net from a shot at the top of the circle from Natalie B. Hannah T took a ball on her own and skillfully went right past their keeper. Both teams fought hard for the win, but Hannah T sealed the game with the final goal. Outstanding defensive play by Kristen T, as she saved shots left and right and even knocked out a penalty stroke late in the second half. Please come out and support the Knights on Thursday at 3:00 at the National Training Center as they take on the Princess Anne Cavaliers in the Conference Tournament Championship game!
