MEDICATION:

If at all possible, medication should be given at home. All medication to be administered at school, whether over the counter or prescription must have an MD order on a Request for Administration of Medication form for oral medication, an Asthma Action Plan for Asthma Medications, or an Emergency Alert and Plan For Self Administration of Epi-Pens. All medication must be brought to the clinic by parents, and over the counter meds must be in a new sealed container.

Medication Forms must be filled out completely by MD, with the appropriate dosage, time, medication name, start date, and end date. Any change in medication order such as, time, dosage, and medication must have a new written MD order and parental permission prior to the change being made. Medication orders are only good for 1 school year and must be renewed annually at the beginning of each school year. If a student is taking more than one medication, each medication must be on a separate order form in order to be accepted by clinic staff.

Parents must pick up any medication that is unused when medication orders expire, or at the end of the school year. Any medication not picked up by parents will be discarded per Virginia Beach City School’s policy.

Students are not permitted to carry medications on their persons to include over the counter medications. With written permission from the MD, and parents, the only medications a student may carry on them are inhalers for asthma, and epinephrine pens for certain life threatening allergies. The student must have a pass in their planner from the clinic in order for them to legally carry these items.
